Driving Action for Healthier Seas
KIMO works with coastal and riverine municipalities to address some of the most significant threats facing the marine environment and coastal communities. Our work focuses on three action areas: Marine Litter, Chemical Pollution, and Maritime Safety and Pollution. Across these areas, KIMO combines advocacy, knowledge-sharing, partnerships and practical projects to raise awareness, influence policy and promote effective solutions. Our approach connects local experience with national, regional and international decision-making, helping municipalities address pollution and environmental risks that often extend beyond their individual jurisdictions.
Our Areas of Action
Preventing and reducing ocean, riverine and microplastic litter through awareness, advocacy, practical solutions and best-practice projects.
Addressing hazardous substances, with a particular focus on PFAS, through knowledge-building, advocacy and stronger regulation.
Promoting safer shipping, stronger emergency response and greater accountability for pollution from maritime incidents.
How the Action Areas Support Our Strategy
KIMO’s three Action Areas are at the heart of its 2026–2030 Strategy, translating its strategic priorities into focused areas for advocacy, knowledge-building and practical action. These three areas also encompass ocean, riverine and microplastic litter; PFAS and other hazardous substances; safe shipping routes, emergency towing vessels and lost shipping containers. Our strategic focus for 2026–2030 reflects the key environmental and safety challenges identified by KIMO’s members and provides the framework for influencing policy, developing projects, sharing knowledge and supporting municipalities. Together, they provide a clear pathway for KIMO to inform, influence and drive action at local, national, regional and international levels.
