Swedish municipalities working together for cleaner seas
KIMO Sweden brings together coastal municipalities to work collectively for cleaner seas and healthier coastal communities. The network gives local authorities a stronger voice on marine environmental issues, enabling them to share knowledge, develop practical solutions and influence decision-makers at national and international level. Its work addresses marine litter, microplastics, chemical pollution, biodiversity, climate change, pollution from ships and the impacts of lost fishing gear. KIMO Sweden also supports research into pressing environmental problems and translates findings into practical information for municipalities. In 2025, the network strengthened its dialogue with the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, continued work on PFAS and marine litter, and advocated for continued support for beach cleaning and action on historical waste from lost fishing gear.

Marine Litter
Reducing marine litter through prevention, awareness, research and practical action to keep Swedish beaches and seas clean.
PFAS & Chemical Pollution
Helping municipalities understand, prevent and manage PFAS and other chemical pollutants affecting coastal and marine environments.
Microplastic Pollution
Reducing microplastic emissions from sources including artificial turf, textiles and municipal activities through practical prevention measures.
Beach Cleaning
Supporting effective beach cleaning while advocating for sustained national funding and stronger recognition of its environmental importance.
Marine Biodiversity
Promoting healthier marine ecosystems by increasing municipal knowledge and action on biodiversity and pressures affecting coastal environments.
Lost Fishing Gear
Highlighting the environmental impacts of lost fishing gear and advocating for action to address historical and ongoing waste.
