The Haunted Sea report examines lost fishing gear and the environmental problems associated with abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear. It explains how lost nets, lines, pots and other gear can continue fishing, creating ghost-fishing impacts, while also contributing to marine litter, microplastics, habitat damage and other ecological pressures. The report considers the scale and consequences of the problem and explores more sustainable and circular approaches to fishing-gear management. It is intended to improve understanding of ghost gear and support practical and policy measures that can prevent losses, improve recovery and reduce the environmental impacts of fishing-related marine litter.
