A Network of Municipalities Working Together for Cleaner Seas
KIMO brings together more than 70 coastal municipalities across eight European countries, creating a network where local governments can share knowledge, experiences and solutions to common marine and coastal challenges.
Our members are at the heart of KIMO’s bottom-up approach, helping shape our priorities and influencing our work at local, national and international levels. Through national and international networks, members gain opportunities to collaborate with like-minded municipalities, access knowledge and resources, participate in projects and strengthen their collective voice to influence policy decisions affecting the marine and coastal environment. The 2026–2030 Strategy focuses this shared effort on marine litter, chemical pollution and pollution from maritime activities.
KIMO represents its members through engagement with the EU, HELCOM, OSPAR, the Bonn Agreement and the North Sea Commission, helping connect local priorities with wider policy and action.

Albert de Hoop served as President of KIMO International from 2008 to 2012 and has remained a strong advocate for coastal communities and marine protection. During his leadership, he championed stronger measures to improve the safety of shipping and prevent pollution from lost containers. His continued involvement has included raising the issue of liability and clean-up following container losses, helping keep this important issue on KIMO’s international agenda.

He also played a leading role in responding to the 1993 Braer oil disaster, one of the most significant environmental incidents in Shetland’s history. In 2025, KIMO awarded Martin Honorary Membership posthumously in recognition of his profound impact on the organisation.
