KIMO’s role
KIMO International leads the project, coordinating participating harbours and fishers, testing practical solutions, collecting evidence and sharing results to inform future HELCOM and OSPAR guidance.
REDUCE-NET-WASTE builds on KIMO’s earlier work on preventing net-cutting waste from entering the sea.
Working with harbours and fishers in Denmark and Sweden, the project will test and document practical solutions under real harbour conditions. Measures include improved collection and storage of net cuttings, better workflows and equipment for net repair and maintenance, and potentially new simple equipment where existing solutions are insufficient. Effectiveness will be assessed primarily through the quantity of net cuttings collected, supported by feedback from harbour staff and fishers. Six harbour-and-vessel clusters will participate, generating practical evidence that can support future guidance and best practice under HELCOM and OSPAR.
