Danish coastal municipalities working together for cleaner coastlines and seas
KIMO Denmark brings together 19 Danish coastal municipalities to work collectively on the environmental challenges facing Denmark’s seas, coastlines and coastal communities. The network provides municipalities with a stronger voice when engaging with government, policymakers and other stakeholders, while connecting local experience with KIMO’s international network. Its work combines political advocacy, knowledge-sharing, research, monitoring and practical projects, with a particular focus on marine litter, chemical pollution, maritime safety and pollution from shipping. KIMO Denmark also works with universities, government agencies, environmental organisations and other partners to develop evidence and solutions that can be applied locally and influence policy nationally and internationally. Through this approach, municipalities can address environmental problems that cross administrative boundaries and strengthen their collective ability to protect and improve Denmark’s marine environment.

Marine Litter
Reducing marine litter through monitoring, prevention, research and practical actions to address pollution reaching Denmark’s beaches and seas.
PFAS & Chemical Pollution
Advocating stronger action on PFAS and hazardous substances, while improving knowledge, wastewater treatment and protection of coastal environments.
Maritime Safety & Pollution
Working to prevent shipping incidents, lost containers, discharges, while reducing the environmental and financial burden on coastal municipalities for clean-up.
Marine Litter Monitoring
Monitoring marine litter on Danish reference beaches to generate evidence for national policy and European marine environmental objectives.
Coastal Restoration
Supporting projects that restore marine habitats and improve ecological conditions in Denmark’s fjords, coastal waters and surrounding environments.
Riverine & Land-Based Pollution
Investigating how plastic and other pollutants move from rivers and catchments into the sea, and developing solutions to prevent leakage.

Denmark’s National Marine Litter Monitoring Programme
KIMO Denmark conducts four annual surveys at selected reference beaches, sorting and recording litter for reporting to OSPAR and Danish authorities.
