KIMO Denmark's role in the project:
KIMO Denmark conducts four annual surveys at selected reference beaches, sorting and recording litter for reporting to OSPAR and Danish authorities.
KIMO Denmark works with Aarhus University on Denmark's national marine litter monitoring programme, surveying selected reference beaches and coastal locations four times each year.
At each site, litter is collected along a standardised 100-metre stretch, sorted and categorised before the results are reported to OSPAR and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. KIMO currently monitors Skagen, Nymindegab and Langerak in the Limfjord, while Aarhus University monitors other Danish reference beaches. The programme provides long-term evidence about the amount, composition and sources of marine litter reaching Danish shores and supports national and international assessment of marine environmental conditions.
