Busy shipping routes are vital to trade but also present significant risks to marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Severe weather, shipping incidents, strandings, oil spills and lost cargo can cause lasting environmental damage, while the costs of clean-up can fall disproportionately on municipalities. KIMO works to improve maritime safety and reduce pollution by raising awareness, influencing international and national policy, and advocating for stronger prevention and emergency response measures. Our work focuses on safer shipping routes, greater availability of emergency towing vessels and stronger measures to prevent and respond to lost shipping containers, while promoting greater liability and financial support for communities dealing with pollution incidents.
