KIMO Denmark's role in the project:
KIMO Denmark researched lost fishing gear, gear marking and end-of-life management, contributing evidence and recommendations to HELCOM’s marine litter work.
This work examined practical ways to reduce abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear in the Baltic Sea.
KIMO Denmark investigated the scale and characteristics of lost recreational fishing gear, best practices for marking fishing equipment and approaches to managing worn-out gear. The work resulted in reports addressing lost angling gear, gear marking and innovative approaches to reducing ghost fishing. The findings contribute to HELCOM’s Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter and provide policymakers, municipalities and the fishing sector with evidence-based information on prevention and management. KIMO Denmark’s work was undertaken in collaboration with the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and the HELCOM Secretariat.
