Overview

Schiermonnikoog is a largely protected Wadden Sea island whose beaches, dunes, salt marshes and tidal flats form part of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The municipality works to protect this fragile environment, including scrutiny of offshore energy infrastructure and its potential effects on Wadden Sea nature. In 2026 the island received Green Destinations QualityCoast Platinum status.
