KIMO Sweden's role:
KIMO Sweden funds or supports research into emerging marine environmental problems and publishes the resulting findings to inform municipalities and wider environmental policy.
Each year, KIMO Sweden supports research into a pressing environmental issue affecting the marine environment.
Previous scholarship projects have examined microplastics from textiles, ghost fishing gear and microplastic emissions from artificial turf, while the programme has more recently addressed PFAS and marine biodiversity. The research is intended to strengthen municipalities’ understanding of emerging environmental problems and identify practical measures that local authorities can take. The resulting reports are shared through KIMO’s international network, helping connect Swedish municipal experience with wider European discussions on marine pollution and environmental protection.
