Haunted Sea

Haunted Sea is the English translation of KIMO Sweden’s investigation into lost and discarded fishing gear. The report examines ghost fishing and the wider ecological consequences of lost nets, lines, creels and pots, including microplastic and heavy-metal release, habitat damage, invasive species and impacts on marine mammals and birds. It also considers consequences for fishing and tourism and reviews initiatives aimed at circular and sustainable solutions. The report was produced through KIMO Sweden’s environmental research scholarship programme and was originally published in Swedish as Det spökar i havet. The English edition makes the research accessible to KIMO’s wider international network.
