Microplastics: from textiles to the ocean

This English-language report investigates how synthetic textiles release microplastic fibres into rivers and seas. It reviews research on emissions during textile production and washing, the presence of microplastics in marine environments and sediments, and potential effects on animals and people. The report also considers measures that could reduce emissions, including changes to textile design, washing practices and filtration technology. Originally produced in Swedish by KIMO Sweden, the report was subsequently translated into English so that its findings and recommendations could be shared more widely. It provides a detailed evidence base for understanding textile-related microplastic pollution and possible responses.
