Whenever the academic school year draws to a close and Europe starts to shut down for the summer, celebrations are the order of the day – and rightly so! But before you get your party hat on, spare a thought for the environment, says KIMO Sweden. Our Swedish municipalities delivered a press release before the year-end celebrations began rolling, in reminding celebrants that there are environmentally friendly alternatives to balloons and confetti.
The press release was distributed to schools and was published in a number of newspapers, websites and on social media. Below are but a few examples:
Party-goers were reminded that plastics become microplastics eventually ending up in watercourses and ultimately in the ocean. Larger items such as latex balloons can and do end up escaping into the environment where they are eaten by animals who very often die as a result. KIMO thus invites all you party people to use rice, flower petals or biodegradable confetti rather than plastic confetti. And ditch the balloons – we know you can find many more creative ways to celebrate!
