The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, known as HELCOM, is an intergovernmental organisation and regional sea convention working to protect the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution.
Its work covers marine litter, biodiversity, eutrophication, hazardous substances, shipping, fisheries, marine protected areas and monitoring. HELCOM brings together the Baltic Sea countries and the European Union to develop coordinated policies, assessments and practical measures. KIMO contributes the experience and priorities of coastal municipalities, helping connect regional policy with local action. Its cooperation with HELCOM includes work on marine litter and abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear, supporting practical solutions for cleaner and healthier Baltic waters.
