KIMO UK's role in the project:
KIMO UK coordinates the UK programme, works with harbours and fishermen, manages waste collection and disposal, develops recycling opportunities and promotes education and awareness.
Fishing for Litter is KIMO's flagship marine-litter initiative.
Participating fishing vessels are provided with large, hard-wearing bags and encouraged to bring ashore litter accidentally caught during normal fishing activities. KIMO coordinates collection and disposal while working with ports, fishermen, governments and waste-management partners. In the UK, more than 70 harbours and over 600 vessels were participating by 2025, with more than 3,000 tonnes of litter collected since the scheme began. During 2025, KIMO UK piloted recycling of Fishing for Litter waste at a Scottish harbour and continued working with recyclers and government to expand recycling nationally. Educational packs for primary-school pupils have also been developed.
