KIMO UK's role in the project:
KIMO UK coordinated collection from participating harbours and arranged transportation of end-of-life fishing nets to Plastix’s recycling facility in Denmark.
KIMO UK ran a pilot to demonstrate that end-of-life fishing nets could be collected from Scottish harbours and recycled rather than sent to landfill.
Nets were collected at Peterhead, Scrabster and Ullapool and transported to Plastix’s facility in Lemvig, Denmark, where they were processed into plastic pellets for use in new products. The project was supported by World Animal Protection during its pilot phase and explored how a sustainable collection and recycling route could be established around Scotland. Although the full-scale project did not ultimately proceed as originally envisaged, the pilot demonstrated the potential for recovering fishing-net materials and generated valuable experience for future recycling initiatives.
