KIMO’s role
KIMO International led the research, surveyed fishers and harbours, developed best-practice recommendations and produced guidance and awareness materials for OSPAR and HELCOM.
KIMO’s Net Cuttings Project investigated how small pieces of fishing net, rope and cord enter the marine environment during fishing gear repair and maintenance.
KIMO surveyed harbour authorities and fishers in Denmark, the Netherlands, Scotland and Sweden, combining interviews, background research and practical experience. The work identified straightforward measures including improved collection and storage of cuttings, better waste-management practices on vessels and in harbours, and increased awareness among fishing communities. The project produced a detailed report, best-practice guide and awareness-raising materials. It directly supported OSPAR Marine Litter Regional Action Plan Action 36 and also informed relevant HELCOM actions, providing practical recommendations for fishers, ports and policymakers.
