KIMO’s role
KIMO International co-developed Pitch In with Fidra, leading municipal and policy engagement and helping develop practical guidance and tools for pitch owners and users.
Pitch In addresses microplastic pollution from artificial sports pitches, particularly the loss of rubber or other granular infill into surrounding soil, drainage systems and waterways.
Following KIMO’s 2018 resolution on microplastic pollution from artificial sports fields, KIMO and Scottish environmental NGO Fidra developed practical resources for designers, procurement specialists, owners, maintenance teams and pitch users. These include best-practice guidance, a community toolkit and individual action-planning tools designed to reduce microplastic loss. The project has also contributed to wider policy discussions around restrictions on intentionally added microplastics and supported work under the OSPAR Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter.
