KIMO Resolution 15/1

This resolution addresses mass balloon releases as a source of marine litter. KIMO highlights that balloons and their strings or ribbons can enter the sea, where they may cause entanglement or be ingested by marine animals. Even latex balloons marketed as biodegradable can remain in marine environments long enough to create a risk. The resolution therefore calls on decision-makers and the public to stop mass releases and choose alternatives that do not create persistent waste. The resource also supports public awareness and municipal action to prevent avoidable marine litter.
